Smart Homes in Devon — Are They Worth It?

“Hey Alexa, turn on the kettle.” Sounds slick, doesn’t it? But when it actually works — and keeps working — that’s when the magic happens.

As a local electrician in Exeter, I’ve fitted loads of smart systems, from simple plug timers to full-on automated homes. Some are brilliant. Some… well, let’s just say not every “smart” gadget deserves the name.

Why Go Smart?

It’s not about being flashy — it’s about control. Properly installed smart systems save you money, energy, and a fair bit of faff. Imagine:

  • Heating turns down when you’re out.

  • Lights switch off when you forget.

  • You can check your energy use from the beach.

That’s the kind of convenience that actually makes a difference.

What Works Well in Devon Homes

Devon houses vary a lot — from modern builds in Cranbrook to old cottages near Dawlish. Not everything plays nicely with Wi-Fi signals through 2-foot stone walls.

For most homes, start simple:

  • Smart thermostats (Tado, Hive, Nest) — brilliant for cutting energy costs.

  • Smart bulbs — especially LEDs you can dim or schedule.

  • Smart plugs — great for controlling lamps or heaters remotely.

Once you’ve got those dialled in, you can add things like cameras, smoke alarms, and even smart doorbells.

Wiring Wisdom

Here’s the thing — a lot of these devices still need proper wiring behind the scenes. Wi-Fi can only do so much. If you want reliability (and no random disconnects), hardwiring smart switches or hubs is the way to go.

I’ve seen setups that look like a tech dream but fail because the basics weren’t right. Start with good electrics — then make them smart.

When Smart Gets Silly

There’s a fine line between “smart” and “overcomplicated.” Do you really need an app to control your toaster? Keep it practical — things that genuinely add value or safety are worth it.

The Devon Smart Home Vibe

We don’t need fancy for fancy’s sake. It’s about balance — the same way I balance a workday with a paddle at Exmouth. Smart tech should make life smoother, not busier.
